Let’s start at the beginning.

Letter 1: April 22, 1947

The Opening Move

“I didn’t mean to stay long. Just a weekend, I told myself.”

Every serial story lives or dies on its first letter. I needed to establish three things immediately:

  1. Calliope’s voice - intimate, melancholic, poetic but not purple

  2. The setting - Ashford Manor as a character itself

  3. The central mystery - who is “you”?

Notice how she contradicts herself in the opening lines. She says she only meant to stay a weekend, but then immediately gives reasons why she’s lingering. This establishes early that Calliope isn’t entirely honest with herself, a key character trait that becomes crucial later.
