I&#8217;ll reveal what you might have missed, explain my writing choices, and show you the research that shaped each letter.</p><p>Let&#8217;s start at the beginning.</p><div><hr></div><h2>Letter 1: April 22, 1947</h2><h3>The Opening Move</h3><p>&#8220;I didn&#8217;t mean to stay long. Just a weekend, I told myself.&#8221;</p><p>Every serial story lives or dies on its first letter. I needed to establish three things immediately:</p><ol><li><p><strong>Calliope&#8217;s voice</strong> - intimate, melancholic, poetic but not purple</p></li><li><p><strong>The setting</strong> - Ashford Manor as a character itself</p></li><li><p><strong>The central mystery</strong> - who is &#8220;you&#8221;?</p></li></ol><p>Notice how she contradicts herself in the opening lines. She says she only meant to stay a weekend, but then immediately gives reasons why she&#8217;s lingering. This establishes early that Calliope isn&#8217;t entirely honest with herself, a key character trait that becomes crucial later.</p>
